As evidenced by my Pinterest, I am an interior design junkie. Growing up as the child of a contractor, I lived in constant renovations and house flips and still love creating new spaces and concepts in fixer-uppers.

So naturally, when I started house hunting for my first condo 4 years ago, I wanted the worst place on the best street.

And that is exactly what I found, with the help of parents and my amazing realtor, Erik Paige. He called me up one day and told me that there was a one bedroom condo with a den for sale in Yorkville, Toronto, but it needed some major TLC. The second I saw the photos, I was sold! It was quirky, spacious (because it was built in 1990) and had tonnes of natural light.

My dad and I got to work immediately after we got the keys and we were able to gut the place within 3 weeks. We removed the floors, painted the entire condo ourselves, added a faux brick wall in the den ourselves, demo‘d the kitchen and even replaced the bathroom.

In designing this space, and really any space my dad and I renovate, our motto is to keep it simple and minimize where we can. This is also great from a cost perspective, less is more!

“A simplified life means that what has to get done will get done. And when we pare down life to it’s simplest, most beautifully basic parts, we are left with room to enjoy each other, to rest, and to truly savour life with all of our hearts, minds and spirits”- Emily Ley

For the bathroom, I chose a floating vanity to maximize the feeling of space, as we were working with a small space. Condos in Toronto aren’t huge but I wanted to make mine feel that way. In order to make it feel light and airy, the key was to use neutral tones and have a minimalist feel. Given that the washroom walls and tile were both a neutral tone, I chose a wood floating vanity to break up the space. We also took out the original bathtub and replaced this was an open glass shower, without a door, to maximize the flow of space.

I am now onto my next project, as my partner Lex and I are house hunting and will likely be renovating in the near future. Although I’m hoping our master bathroom will be a larger space to work with in comparison to my condo, I am still inspired by minimalist and neutral bathroom designs and will likely be applying that style to our new space.
